What is UFB?
UFB stands for Ultra Fast Broadband. It’s a general term used to describe the delivery of internet and other data services via fibre optic cable – or fibre. In New Zealand, UFB refers to a government funded program to deliver fibre connectivity to homes and businesses.
It’s worth noting that not all fibre connections are ultra fast. The lower cost, entry level fibre connections currently offered can be no faster – or even slower – than other products such as microwave wireless or VDSL. However, all fibre connections have the potential to deliver ultra fast broadband.

What do I need to do to get UFB?
Once you’ve checked your address has Fibre available, give us a call on 867 6384 to book your installation. We’ll organise everything for you.
What does the installation involve?
Installing fibre to your house involves physically connecting a fibre optic from the roadside cable to your premises. This may involve digging a trench, feeding the line through existing ducting or other methods. This work is carried out by authorised Chorus installers or sub- contractors.
A small fibre connection box is installed in your house – usually adjacent to your TV set.
What does the installation cost?
Most standard domestic fibre installations are free at the moment – this includes:
- Installing the fibre cable from the street to your home (up to 200m of cabling from roadside curb to house)
- Installing and connecting the necessary equipment outside and inside the home
Non Standard Installation
- If your house is more than 200m from the Fibre access point on the street there will be additional costs
How fast is UFB?
There are a variety of UFB plans available and data rates are determined by the plan you have.
